Rotan E. Lee Scholarship

The Academy In Manayunk (AIM) announces the establishment of a scholarship fund in memory of Rotan E. Lee, who passed away on April 24, 2006.

Rotan E. Lee, a partner in the law firm of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy, had been an integral part of and advisor to the team that conceived of and created the Academy. He showed deep concern for and sensitivity to children, and realized the importance of education in bettering their lives. His early recognition of the benefits that the Academy would provide to Philadelphia area children, who might be struggling with learning disabilities, motivated Lee to become more than a legal advisor. All members of the executive staff saw him as a mentor and as an insightful, helpful friend.

Lee’s presence in the formative meetings added much to the enthusiastic atmosphere. His impressive physical appearance, at 6’4”, belied his gentle but dynamic participation in all discussions. His love of language showed through both in his own speaking and his instant reaction to how others, in a meeting, used words. It was abundantly clear that his affection for the best use of words, coupled with his evident concern for improving the lives of children, made him an ideal member of the advisory team of the Academy. It was with these thoughts that the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors established a scholarship in Lee’s memory.

The Academy In Manayunk (AIM), is a unique school created to provide expanded programs and research-to-practice approaches for children with learning disabilities. AIM incorporates the highly successful methodologies developed by Sally L. Smith at the Lab School of Washington® for almost forty years. The Academy utilizes visual and performing arts, together with rigorous academics, to meet the individual styles and needs of its students. AIM students “live it and learn it” through educational immersion, research-based learning strategies, and assistive technology. The Academy is also a center for the professional development of educators in the Delaware Valley who will acquire and then disseminate the latest research-to-practice applications in schools throughout the region.

Contributions to the Rotan E. Lee Scholarship Fund can be sent to the Academy In Manayunk, 169 Conarroe Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127.  For more information, please contact proberts@aimpa.org or complete our web pledge form.
